My Ethical Theory

I mostly follow Utilitarianism, meaning that I think people should contribute to their society. Therefore, their actions should benefit parts of society in the long run, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that all of their efforts should serve others.

I also believe that intention and effort matter more than the outcome. For example, if somebody kills somebody else in a car accident, I would judge the situation by his intention in the first place. If he intended to kill them, then I would hold them responsible for the outcome of the accident. If not, then I would see if he did all he could to prevent it. If he was driving under the influence, then he certainly did not do his best to prevent the accident. It would be the same situation if his car needed maintenance, and he did not tend to it.

I also believe in Relativism, and I think nothing is absolute. I am against lying but would lie if it would save somebody’s life.

As an example of a generally bad thing that at the moment I thought was the right thing to do, I remember lying to one of my high school teachers and told him that I didn’t know who was behind a prank. I did it because I believed that the joke was an accident and my friend would get punished for some accident.
